Senior year is known to be the year to just slack off, but one daunting task stands in the way of the senior class and a moment of relaxation: Applying to College.
From students applying to their one dream school to those applying to ten different schools, the idea of college is on everyone’s minds every second of the day. This year’s senior class is full of overachievers, and a majority of students are applying ‘early action’ for colleges. Applying early can be even scarier, because the bar is raised, the deadline is sooner, and for private colleges, the acceptance is even binding (meaning once you are in, you are going, no matter what).
Early application deadlines to most schools are due October 15th, with the school submitted work due on the 22nd. With these dates so close, here are some tips and advice to applying to college!
Things you will need to apply:
Though this process is scary, it is a chance to show the world all you, as a senior, have accomplished through your high school career. Natalie Miller, who has already been accepted to a few schools, gives her input to those applying by advising “don’t stress out too much, but stay on top of deadlines and read over your essays as much as possible.”
If you are really struggling, make sure you go talk to your counselor about what’s worrying you. They are always willing to help, and know better than anyone what you need to get done. Their website on Hillgrove’s webpage has numerous college tips and help with the specifics we listed above.
Good luck to all of the current seniors here at Hillgrove, and we can not wait to see how far you have come by graduation!

Things you will need to apply:
- Teacher recommendations- make sure you ask teachers as soon as possible (at least two weeks prior to your application due date). Most will ask you for a copy of your transcript, as well as a resume of all of your activities in high school. This is so the letter can be personalized even further, but make sure the teachers you ask also like you.
- Sending transcripts- for most colleges, or ones outside of the Common App, you have to go to the guidance office and request to have your transcript sent. It is $2 for each one you send!
- Common App- this application is used for most colleges to make it a general application process, so make sure you find your schools, do the application, and keep an eye on your dates!
- FAFSA- you and your parents will need to fill this out and send it everywhere you apply, so colleges can see your financial situation and know how much financial aid they can offer you
- Essays- most colleges will require essays as a big portion of seeing who you are as a person. Make sure you put time and care into your essays and have others check them to help catch grammar issues you may not.
- Test scores- You will need to submit your test scores to schools when you apply, so make sure you send them from College Board (SAT Scores) and the ACT website.
