200 Coca-Cola Brands… Gone
By: Kaya Wilson
Coca-Cola announced they are going to cancel 200 brands. The company announced they were going to cancel the outdated drinks such as Tab, Zico, and Odwalla. Reducing the production of these drinks will have Coca-Cola focus more on their most popular drinks.Sprite, Fanta, Schweppes, Fresca, Coke Zero with no sugar are the most popular drinks of the company. The company is going to retire its long 57 year run of the diet soda Tab, since there was an 11% drop in sales. Including the Dasani and Powerade brands. The company is planning on cutting more local brands than the most popular worldwide.
Many Coca-Cola lovers were shocked and surprised by the sudden news announced on Thursday. Billie Billups who has her zero balancing company stated, “Why are they getting rid of my favorite drinks? I have loved them for over 40 years.” Billie as well favored most of the drinks Coca-Cola is canceling. Janelle Jackson who is a Delta employee stated, “I don’t think it is a great idea for them to suddenly cancel 200 brands of soda because some customers may be upset with that and decide to stop buying from Coca-Cola.” The drinks Coca-Cola is deciding to cut are favorites of the last generation, because once they first came out 2000 kids were not born. Sierra Johnson who is a sophomore at UGA stated, “I am not unhappy about this. I never drank soda anyway especially now when I am trying to stay healthy during this time.” There are many reasons why the sales for these brands could be down but the most obvious one is the world is in a global pandemic and many people are struggling financially. Their main priority is probably not soda. However, many of the brands shutting down are only in certain markets, and are not for sale nationwide. CEO of Coca-Cola James Quincey stated “The underperforming beverages have little to no scale, and that their sales represent only two percent of revenue.”
It was reported that Coca-Cola has had a hard time during this pandemic because of many restaurant closures. Many say that Coke’s Tab sodas retirement should have come decades ago. The marketing audience of Tab sodas promoted perfect bodies. Tab motivated young girls to lose weight. There has now been more investment in Diet Coke and Coke Zero. Tab was Coke's first diet drink launched in 1963. There are more likely going to be cuts in the hydration category including Smart Water. With Coca-Cola cutting its brands most likely other companies will follow if they share similar reasons.
