Clueless is remembered as an influential 90’s movie which mimicked and defined teen culture. Now, talk of a remake is surfacing. Will there really be a new Clueless movie?
Clueless is a 90’s American coming-of-age romantic comedy film written and directed by Amy Heckerling. It is based on Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma, changing the setting to modern-day Beverly Hills. The film grossed $56.1 million in the United States, received many positive reviews from critics, has developed a cult following, and is considered to be one of the best teen films of all time.
The 1995 movie defined 90’s teen culture. The movie showed a glimpse into a world of oversized mobile phones and most definitely the amazing fashion. Cher Horowitz, the main character, is a well-intentioned but superficial girl, who is attractive, popular and extremely wealthy. A few months till her sixteenth birthday, she rose to the top of her high school social scene. She lives in a Beverly Hills mansion with her father Mel, a $500-an-hour litigator. Her mother died from an accident during a routine liposuction procedure when Cher was a baby. Cher's best friend is Dionne Davenport, who is also rich and pretty and understands what it is like to be envied.
Cher decides to give back to the community by "adopting" a "tragically unhip" new girl at school, Tai Frasier. Cher and Dionne give Tai a makeover and eventually she becomes popular. Cher also tries to extinguish the attraction between Tai and Travis Birkenstock, an amiable skateboarding slacker, and to steer her toward Elton, a popular rich snob. The movie ends with Cher falling in love with her step brother and accepting Tai’s wish to be with Travis.
There have been many attempts to remake Clueless in the past. Two years ago, plans for an Off-Broadway musical adaptation were announced, and on Oct. 8 this year, a premiere date was finally set for Dec. 11.
It remains to be seen whether Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, or the politically problematic Stacey Dash would return as the stars, or whether this would be a true remake. Of course, the tragic death of Brittany Murphy would also be a difficult role to fill.
Many people have questions like Alyssa Hett, a student from Hillgrove High School. She wonders if the cast will be the same. “I hope they have the same cast as they did, that would be so cool.” Another student, Coco Carleton, was wondering when it was going to come out. “I have been hearing many things about the remake, but I was wondering when it was going to be released.” Many students were happy that they were making a remake, but student Maya Cramer says she is not sure that it will be the same. “I don’t think it’s a bad I idea to do a remake but I know it won’t be the same.”
Clueless is a classic that many people loved. The real question is, is the remake going to be too different and just terrible or is it going to be amazing and a new fan favorite.
