The definition of a cheerleader is someone who supports a sports team with chants and movements, or a person who energetically supports something. It can range from chanting slogans to intense physical activity. It can be performed to motivate sports teams, to entertain the audience, or for competition. Hillgrove High School consists of basketball cheer, football cheer, and competition cheer. Tryouts for football cheer this year are April 6th , 2020.
Coach Curran, a football cheer coach, was able to say a few things on the topic. “We always look for cheerleaders who are going to be dedicated, cheerleaders who are going to work hard, and cheerleaders who are going to represent Hillgrove well.” In tryouts this year coach Curran and the other football cheer coaches are looking for what they look for every year: dedication, hard workers, and girls who will represent Hillgrove well. Coach Curran then followed with, “We don’t really have many problems at tryouts. I mean honestly, I think our biggest, I guess quote on quote problem is that we have so much interest in the cheer program, and it just breaks our hearts that not everyone can make the team because we just simply don't have enough spots, so I guess that would maybe be our biggest problem.” Every year many of the girls at Hillgrove tryout for the cheer teams, however the spots are limited. Girls must do their best to impress the coaches in order to make the team.
Efe Ojeh, a student at Hillgrove who is trying out for the team this year, was happy to be interviewed on the topic. “From all the practice I’ve done, and time I’ve dedicated, I do feel like I have a chance at making the team this year.” Many girls trying out for the team this year have never been on the Hillgrove football cheer team. They have practiced really hard and now all they can hope for is to make the team.
Nathalia , a football cheer captain, will also be trying out for the team this year. “Um, I think if I practice hard enough and I just pay attention to my motion placement and I’m sharp, and I put my all into it, like I do every year, I think I’ll be pretty good but I think there’s a lot of, you know, good cheerleaders um trying out and we also have the rising seniors, so that’s um a big class that has a lot of really good cheerleaders as well so we’re just going to find out I guess.” Nathalia has been a cheerleader for Hillgrove since her freshman year. Though she has made the team before, she still plans on doing her very best and showing the coaches why she deserves to be on the team.
Overall, cheer tryouts can be nerve wrecking. Sometimes a person will put in their all and they either make the team, or they do not. Therefore, they must do their best and hope they make it.
