The Gee Family has taken traveling to a whole other level. Garrett (27), Jessica (31), Dorothy (4), and Manilla Gee (3) have been on a trip around the world for 2 years now, and do not intend to stop any time soon. Garrett was still a student at Brigham Young University when he sold his mobile scanning, also known as QR Code, app to Snapchat for $54 million in 2015. Garrett and his wife Jessica were at a crossroads and had to decide what they wanted to do. They eventually decided to take a trip around the world with their children, and sold all of their belongings, albeit 2 boxes of journals and photos. They decided to put the $54 million in savings and use the money they received from selling all of their possessions, which was around $50,000. The money had nearly run out about 6 months into the trip, but that was when people had started to notice their travels, and they began to receive sponsorships from companies such as AirBnB. Instead of going home, they decided to continue to travel. The family has documented their travels on social media and have accumulated nearly 800,000 followers on Instagram.
This past month the family participated in a promotional trip sponsored by Disney called “30 Stays in 30 Days”. Each day the family went to a new Disney World resort/hotel. A suitcase would appear at their door every night with clues as to what resort they would be going to the next day. During the day they would either go to one of the four parks or do activities at the resort they were staying in. The trip was slightly longer than expected because of Hurricane Irma. The Gee’s had to hunker down in Disney’s Beach Club Resort for a few days to wait out the storm.
The Gee family used their fortune as an opportunity to travel the world. Hillgrove students have differing ideas of what they would do with the money. Max Johnson says that if he earned $54 million he would “probably go to Europe for like a year” and Natalie Farrell thinks she would “save/invest about half, pay off my house, go to any college I want, donate about $2 million, and use the rest to travel”. The Gee’s have been to over 40 countries and been on over 100 flights. They only carry a few bags with them on their journeys, keeping only clothes and other basic necessities in their possession. It was difficult for Hillgrove students to narrow down what they would bring. Natalie Farrell would bring “a camera, about a month’s worth of clothes, 3 pairs of shoes, toiletries, probably like $10,000 and a travel buddy” and Max Johnson would bring “[his] phone, probably a laptop, clothes, and pets”.
The Bucket List Family is essentially living the dream. Many people would say the experiences that the family gets to have are priceless. Soon, the family will get to have these experiences with a new person. Garrett and Jessica announced on September 17th that Jessica is five months pregnant with their third child. The future of their travels is uncertain because of this new chapter of their life that is approaching. Regardless, their travels have given the young minds of Dorothy and Manilla perspectives that most children would never have the opportunity to have. Hopefully the future Gee child will be able to see just as many sights as their older siblings, as we live vicariously through their little lives.
