Breonna Taylors Case
By. Mia Wright
It all started in March of 2020, the start of the COVID Pandemic, and a little while after George Floyd was killed in broad daylight. Breonna Taylor was a medical worker who dedicated her life to helping others and helped during the Pandemic. She and her boyfriend were sleeping when the police conducted a knock and announce warrant that didn't go as planned.
The whole reason for the raid was because they were looking for Breonna Taylor's ex-boyfriend. Although according to the New York Times, the main suspect was already found before they conducted the raid. When Breonna and Kenneth (her boyfriend), got up to answer the door, Kenneth grabbed his legally owned handgun, thinking that the loud banging was Breonna's ex-boyfriend. As they approached the door they yelled "who is it", he heard no response. The door was then bashed in and Kenneth shot one bullet, while in return the three police shot Breonna Taylor eight times. She did not get help in over 20 minutes because an hour before the raid, the ambulance was told to leave. Emily Bond, a junior from Hillgrove High School, shares, "Everyone there is involved even the ambulance who was told to leave. Why did they not ask about it or mention it to someone.” While Joey Jordan, a junior at McEachern High School, thinks, "Probably a cover-up to what happened in the situation. They knew what they were gonna do and they knew they were in the wrong, because why wouldn't they ( the ambulance) stay just in case."
After that night, the police report came out and had two grave mistakes in it. One being that Bronna Taylor was not hurt at all and the other being that there was no forced entry. Even though if the police were there and experienced the situation and two major things were incorrectly put in an official report, it looks really bad. Emily Bond goes on to express, "They should be fired for that. If you're involved in a police report and you see something but don't tell the truth you should be fired." During that night Kenneth was also arrested and charged with the attempted murder of police but was later dropped. Nicole Jicha, a senior at Hillgrove High School explains how she feels by saying, " It pissed me off. I cannot put myself in the investigator's shoes but some make the arrest to just have a lead because they’re so pressured to."
Breonna Taylors' death affected multiple things. One being that Louisville was shut down for three days just for protesting and shut down again for the day of the trial. Her name was chanted in protests all over the nation, trying to bring her justice along with George Floyd. Nicole expresses that, " I think from George Floyds to hers it just set aflame. More and more people were standing up. People I go to school with day to day with started to speak up, go to protest. I saw so many people who were educating themselves." Many celebrities and athletes are using her name as a spotlight for their season, to spread awareness and bring her justice. Joey thinks, "It’s good because everyone looks at athletes and their words set into people more.
Many protests are still going on today to continue to fight the power and create changes for a better system. While the future is unknown, it is very important to continue to educate yourself on what is going on around you. We'll all be voting soon and your vote matters.
