The 2019 Winter Break for Cobb county occurred from the 18th to the 22nd of February. Coincidentally, the first day of Winter Break also happened to be Presidents Day, being one of the reasons why other schools were out that Monday. While a lot of students happily look forward to Winter Break, many others do not have the option of doing so. Only certain counties in Georgia have the privilege of offering Winter Break, Cobb County and Cherokee County being well known for doing so. In the midst of there being different opinions about Winter Break, those that are granted the freedom try to use it to their best advantage.
When asked if she did anything productive over Winter Break, Hillgrove junior Jalicia Norman stated, “I finished some homework and read books, so I guess I did some productive things.” Eleventh grader Kaitlyn Whitner claimed, “I worked six days out of this break and two of them were double shifts. Plus online work haha.” Jayden Griddine who is a junior as well said, “Yes, but not as much as I would have liked to.”
In response to whether all counties should have Winter Break like Cobb, Kaitlyn passionately exclaimed, “DUH!! All students should get the chance to pause and just regain some sanity for the pressures of America’s public school system.” Jayden stated, “Yes, because it gives students to prepare for upcoming tests or prepare for graduation.” Unlike Kaitlyn and Jayden, Jalicia was a little indecisive, saying “Maybe, maybe not. I’m not sure about other counties on break when we are.”
Jalicia responded with, “I went thrifting for the first time.”, when asked what was the most interesting thing she did over break. Jayden just simply said, “I went to the aquarium with my friend.” Kaitlyn stated that the most interesting she did was, “Probably going to the birthday party of one of my besties!! I got to finally get cute and spend times with my friends!”
Winter Break can be known to have its own sort of controversies. From if it is really necessary or not to only certain counties in Georgia being granted access to it. Due to the stress and anxiety school often causes, a lot of students are always elated and more than relieved when Winter Break approaches. While some Hillgrove students may feel that Winter Break has some insignificance about it, it appears that the overall student body is more than grateful to benefit from the freedom it offers.
