On October 28th 2017, at 3:30pm, the Hillgrove band will be performing at Mercedes Benz Stadium Bands of America Super Regional competition in Atlanta GA.. Earlier in the month Hillgrove performed at Bands of America, North Carolina regional championship. According to Rachel Martinez, “Last year we made eighth in prelims and then we went down to tenth in finals, this year we're hoping to get a much better score.”
“There’s not really winning BOA, but there is. It’s point based so the top twelve get into finals and then you do another performance and you get placed in finals,” says Rachel Martinez.
This year the marching band is performing their show called After Dark,“It's basically about this big machine that makes marching band people and their there this good guard girl and there's a guy and a person comes out on stilts and they have a big fight, it's cool” says marching band member Rachel.
Rachel Martinez, a sophomore at Hillgrove, has been part of the marching band for two years following her sister's’ path. In the marching band she plays the mellophone, “ It's like if the trumpet and the french horn had a child.” She is so enthralled with marching band that she has show shirts from this year, last year, and from when my sister was here. Rachel was hesitant to join marching band at first though, “At first I thought marching band was for chumps and my sister was a chump for doing it, but then I actually saw the stuff and hung out with some of the people and I was like wow this is great, this is fun. And then like I became one of the chumps, it’s really rewarding and really fun. And I was like whoa, these people seem really cool. You make a lot of friends, it's like another family.
If Hillgrove football does not make playoffs then BOA will mark the end of marching band season but marching band members hope they will get to continue on. “We hope not [that our season will end] because we have BOA (Bands of America) this weekend and then we have expo on Monday, it’s like a silent judge competition.” “There's no actual points you just silently judge other bands. And if we go to the playoffs we’ll be going to games.” Whenever marching band season does end Rachel plans on doing drama club but not participating in any other sports.
Hillgrove marching band ended up placing 13th in the BOA competition. Congratulations Hawks!
