In the Friday night lights you can hear the crowd roaring and cheering on the Hillgrove football team with excitement as they get in position to face the other team. Football to most seems like all fun and games but to the players it can be a very meaningful sport. “Playing football means a lot to me because it creates a lot of teamwork and friendships within the team.” Senior Cameron Bachmuller says. The Football team has created a bond that is deeper than catching footballs with each other. “We’re like a family, and us seniors are their older brothers.”. Playing football has taught players how to be a leader and work on time management and also given them the chance to showcase their talents. As it seniors last year they focus on becoming that leader to the team and growing as a player Senior Ethan Morse explains how he chooses to be a leader, “I uplift my teammates and support and cheer them on throughout games and practices.” . Although the team is always either practicing or getting ready for a game they agree that there are some fun benefits to being on the team rather than just practicing everyday, “Some benefits to being on the team is pre-game meals and that fact that its is physically helping be in a better shape and making me overall a good player.” Football player, Trace expresses Sometimes football can takeover a players life and it can be hard to focus on other things such as schoolwork and jobs the players might have. It can be hard to balance being on the field and in the classrooms for some of these players and might cause negative conflicts within the team. “sometimes I have to stay up a bit later to complete my schoolwork if I come home later from practice.” Being on the football team and playing the sport has created a sense of belonging for most players and an endless bond for the family but most importantly creates responsibility throughout the team whether its for homework or being a leader for the team. It has shown fun and positive benefit for the team and coaches and an inspiration for players to show they’re talent for opportunities to come.
