Flu season is back and has been going strong since October of 2017. The flu, also known as influenza, has always been dangerous and hard to get over. However, this year the flu is playing no games. There have been 63 pediatric deaths reported by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and 37 of those have been children. The CDC also reported 11,965 people have been hospitalized due to flu-related issues. These statistics have been blowing past records out of the water. With such a viral and hard to prevent virus it is no wonder that all people across America are paying close attention to the flu.
The flu can spread quite easily, but when in a packed school the germs spread like rumors. Many of the people who catch the flu end up being students. Students are surrounded by and interact with multiple people--that carry multiple germs--hours a day. Lets see how the students of Hillgrove High School feel about the flu.
Hillgrove High School Student, Rachael Beno, personally knows of two people affected by the flu this year, her dad and brother. Beno made it clear that this year the flu is scary and something we all should watch out for: “Yes [it concerns me] because it’s such a common thing people can get and people are dying from it and it’s scary."
Beno also voiced her opinion on why the vaccine is still needed: “The vaccine is a trivalent virus, so it can’t infect you with the flu because it’s not an active virus that they’re putting into you."
Another Hillgrove High School student, Areyanna Romain, told us her favorite tips for getting rid of the flu: “[Just] be in bed, have tea, eat right, and have covers on you."
Romain also said, “I don’t think many people are healthy this year, and I think it’s gonna get worse in the couple years ahead of us." Romain is worried that many people are not healthy and it is causing the germs to spread more quickly and violently. Without controlling the spread of the virus and our germs, who knows when the dangerous virus will end it’s roundabouts from person to person.
