The basketball cheer tryouts are being held this season at Hillgrove High. Students from all different grade levels will be trying out for a competitive spot on the team. They will learn various different routines and cheers during a two-day clinic. Then, the following day the girls will showing the routine to the coaches where the decision making is made on who will make the cheer team. This intense process will show who the best are and ultimately who makes the team as well.
These tryouts are three days long, two days being clinics, and the last day being a judgement day. The tryouts were held September 16,17,and 18, and they start when school ends to about 5:30. “ You have to wear black shorts and a white t-shirts and the coaches prefer a bow in your hair,” explains Valen Byrdsong, a tenth grader trying out for the cheer team. To tryout for the team you do not need to know how to tumble. Coach Bell, the coach for the basketball cheer team , says, “ So, for the basketball tryouts it is a little bit different than the football tryouts, it's a lot of focus on rhythm a lot of stomping.” This means that for the girls who are advanced rhythmically and pick up dances quicker , are more likely to make the team. Tumbling is an advantage though. The coaches are anticipating approximately 70 girls to tryout. Most girls trying out have been cheering since middle school. Taryn Fry, a cheerleader says she has been cheering for around two years and Valen has been cheering and tumbling for eight to nine years. The girls have been preparing for at least a week. Taryn says “ the majority of the time the cheer are the same , but when i was on JV I gotta make up our own.” The cheers that the girls use to tryout and perform with are most likely the same ones every year, but sometimes the girls get to make up their own depending on the season. The basketball cheer tryouts are not as physically intense as the football cheer tryouts because they have to use their voice more than they do their body. Girls that tried out said they thought they made the team because if they made the team one year they are more likely to make the team the following years as well. Coach Bell said, “ We will start practice on halloween and practice through the month of November through December.” The girls will practice and cheer most of fall and winter. The tryouts are fun and great to experience. The girls seem to have a lot of fun. |
