What the world needs now is love not likes. Everyone in the Hillgrove High School Marching Band would agree with you on this because that is exactly what their show is about this year.
The Hillgrove High School Marching Band took their show on the road to the Jacksonville State University Regional BOA(Bands of America) in Jacksonville, Alabama. This is the first of three competitions that they are participating in this year. The other two competitions take place on October 20th at GSU and October 27th at McEachern High School. They also have a Cobb County exhibition on October 15th at McEachern High School.
The band’s theme this year is, “What the World Needs Now” and is based on social media and how it is affecting the world today. Dacey Ngo explained that, “this years theme is about how we should not be obsessed with getting likes on social media, but rather focus on the love and support of others.” They have based their show mainly around Instagram by setting up accounts for the three different sections the band is separated into. These accounts are used to be able to show the audience a behind the scenes look at what the band is doing. If you are lucky, you will be able to catch a live show on the accounts and be able to see the show from the perspective of the marcher.
This year, Hillgrove’s band received an award within their class. Hillgrove is in class four A (determined by how big the school is), which was the largest one at the competition. The Hillgrove band placed second in their class at BOA JSU. “ We placed first in our class for overall general effect”, said Venicia Twymon. General effect refers to the overall effect of the show in regards to the theme, and music as well as the effectiveness of the performance.
The top 11 bands in the competition made finals and performed again, and then will be ranked after all bands perform for the second time. This year Hillgrove made finals and were able to perform for a second time. “We made finals. We ended up placing ninth at finals,” said Dacey Ngo.
After finals are over, there is a tradition that is held at every BOA competition, it is called retreat. At the end of every competition, after the finals awards are handed out, all bands that made finals are told to break-ranks. “We could meet band members that made finals as well.”, explained Venicia Twymon, saying that retreat was her favorite part of the weekend.
Overall our band did well in the competition and represented our school to the best of their ability. We wish them luck on the rest of their competitions throughout the rest of their season.
