Marching band is a way for students to express their passions for music. The Hillgrove Marching Band website states their purpose.“ We strive to offer the best possible leadership for our program so our students grow, learn, and have experiences to benefit them for years to come.” Hillgrove Marching Bands. But what does marching band mean to the players?
Just like sports and other extracurriculars, marching bands leave an impact on participants' lives. Sophia Claire, a junior marching band member shares, “It's given me an outlet of friends to go to everyday and you get to learn with people you really like”. Marching Band offers a safe space for people to make new friends and build new relationships. Brennan Rust a junior, marching band member explains, “Band is the one constant in my life so it’s the one I base my life around, my emotional support”. Students in Marching Band will remember the memories made and friendships that were created for a lifetime.
Marching Band brings along new learning opportunities, “Instead of having just one group of people who are all in the same skill set, it's lots of different people with lots of different skill sets where you can help improve each other. I'm not in the top class, I'm in the second top class but I'm also in marching band with people in the top class so when I'm in marching band they can give me advice", said Brennan Rust. Working with new people and different skills allows for greater growth. Others push each other to be the best they can be, because it does not only help them, but creates a greater good for the entire band. Sophia Claire has expressed improvements in her learning outside of band, “Learning how to play with other people and working as a group has taught me to work with others”. This builds better communication which can help with jobs or other life incidents in the future.
Marching band isn't just an extracurricular but more of a family. It provides safe places for tons of students here at Hillgrove and around the world. It shows talent and allows for self-expression.
