Dansby Swanson is a shortstop for the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball team, but with the season ending the Braves will not resign him, making him a free agent. He has been bumped up and down from major league and minor league for the past few years. In 2022 he signed with the Braves for 3.1 million dollars but due to covid the season was cut short. Dansby signed a one-year contract with the braves in 2021 which was also the height of his career. Unfortunately, if the Braves end up not resigning Dansby, and he cannot find a new team he might get bumped back down to the minor league.
Dansby is a fan favorite, but the fame is not enough to save his career “there's other shortstops that are available this year that some consider to be better than him,” Avery Thronton a major baseball fan states. Being a free agent can be a stressful situation. The "stress of not being signed by someone or having to find a new career or being forced into retirement earlier than you want to be, or not getting what you want out of deals with other teams.” That leads to who his other options are, and what will he get out of it? Some other free agents in the shortstop position for this upcoming season include Tim Anderson (club option), Xander Bogaerts (opt-out), Carlos Correa (opt-out), José Iglesias, Dansby Swanson, Trea Turner, with many shortstops already signed, it may be difficult to find a team. Hopefully with Dansby’s amazing season, teams will consider him a strong contender.
Dansby is still young and that’s exactly what teams are looking for, someone who has some experience but will last a long time. "There are teams like the Dodgers who are also having their shortstops going into free agents this year and they want to continue at the level they have been and then there's teams like the Giants who have a lot of money to spend” Avery argues, but then others think “The dodgers because that’s where Freddy went and they have the same agent” Kaden Knight, without any hesitation. Many teams are expanding their roster, with lots of money to spend. Dansby will end up back with Freddy Freeman (a former Braves player) and continue his baseball career.
"When Dansby signs a contract whether it’s the Braves or another team he will, “give up the ability to get money from some team or leave the place that they enjoyed just to get more money”, said Avery. Players give up their teammates and their homes, sometimes even moving halfway across the country, leaving everything behind. It may be hard to adapt to a new living environment "Different cities have different cultures that surround them, and different organizations have different cultures he might not like a new team as much and may change as a person,” Avery says. One of the worst things for an athlete is to struggle mentally, they do not play their best and may end up losing love for their sport. Leaving is “sad but you're going to go wherever the most money is” Olivia Gabner says.
Change can be a good or sad thing depending on the way you look at it. Practicing with new teammates everyday can bring quick bond, readjusting may be hard and uncomfortable at first but not forever. A new contract might be just what Dansby needs to further his career even more.
