Music is something people all around the world enjoy. Of course most people listen to mainstream artist who have been in the industry for several years, but all of these artist went through the same thing. No matter their background, they struggled to find their sound, and had to experiment all kinds of music to figure out what suits them. Within the last three years alternative pop, and R&B have become extremely popular. The Talon would like to explore artist in these genres ; including 6lack, Summer Walker, Billie Eilish.
Alternative R&B is something that has been around for awhile, but the 2010s have seen some interesting artist in this category. Summer Walker is one of the newest R&B artists to fit in the alternative category. Alternative R&B is music of the rhythm and blues category, but the artist adds their personality to the music. Walker is a 22 year-old Atlanta native who got her start last year. She released the singles CPR and Session 32 on Apple Music. Walker is a former adult entertainer who claims she does not really remember why she dipped into music. She describes herself as “introverted” and likes “to keep to myself.”
“She’s so good, I love her.”, says Briana Marks. She goes onto say “Her music just puts you in different moods and she seems really chill.” But Walker is not the only artist people feel this way about. Billie Eilish is an alternative pop artist who came to prominence in 2016 with songs like “Ocean Eyes” and Bellyache on Soundcloud. She was only 14 when they were recorded. Now 17 Eilish has over 7 million followers on Instagram and is frequently trending on Apple Music. She is known for her unique style and her darkly written songs. She is a very versatile artist but still remains humble as a teenage star. “Oh my God I love her so much and her voice is so beautiful.”,says Aniyah King. “ I think she’s real different, like her style and her, you can hear it in her music.”, says TJ Gayle. Her originality is a key factor that she will need to keep so that she does not become a sell out. That is one of the most important parts of being an artist.
The last artist is 6lack (pronounced black). TJ Gayle says,”He reminds me of The Weeknd, but at the same time he’s still original,”. The six in his name is relevant because he is Atlanta raised, more specifically he grew up in zone six. 6lack, born Ricardo Valentine, was originally born in Baltimore, Maryland, but immigrated to Atlanta at the age of four. 6LACK is signed to Atlanta based LVRN records along with a dual contract with Interscope records. Summer Walker happens to be one of his label mates.
Each of these artists are clearly on the rise. The biggest thing they have in common is their ability to stay original besides the fact that their contemporaries seem to be the exact opposite. 6lack is nominated for a grammy for “best rap song/performance” for his collaboration with J. Cole. Walker and Eilish are certain to be catching up with him soon.
