The horror genre has thrived thanks to movie franchises such as Paranormal Activity and the Purge, raking in millions of dollars while making millions of viewers scream. In 2011, the horror game was changed when the show American Horror Story: Murder House premiered on the channel FX. Americans had seen plenty of horror movies and a few frightening TV shows, but American Horror Story brought an intricate plot and pushed the boundaries of television programming. American Horror Story is still producing eerie entertainment and is currently airing its seventh season: Cult.
Cult is based in a suburban Michigan town and centers around the lives of married couple Ally and Ivy. The events in the show are based around the time before, during, and after the 2016 Presidential election. Ally has several phobias and they become more severe after Donald Trump wins the election. She fears clowns and begins to see people dressed as spine-chilling versions of them around town, which many dismiss as delusions. Throughout the five episodes that have aired so far, a cult terrorizes Ally and the town as a whole.
Many students at Hillgrove have watched all or some seasons of the spooky show. Blake Norrington says that his “favorite season is Coven” and that Cult is “so good”. Nichole Beck’s favorite season is “Freak Show” because of “the dark twist on a typical carnival”. The show is very popular but not every season is. According to Nichole Beck, the fifth season, Hotel, “got way too weird and uncomfortable at some parts to be considered entertaining”. The show is unique in that it has reoccurring actors from season to season. Nichole’s favorite actor is “Sarah Paulson” because she “is able to play a varied set of roles throughout the seasons very well” and Blake’s is “Emma Roberts” because “when she’s cast a role, Emma really knows how to play it”.
American Horror Story has gained popularity from each season to the next. People cannot get enough of the unnerving storylines and shocking plot twists that each season entails. The show may sometimes push boundaries and have scenes that people may find uncomfortable, but the quality of the writing, acting, and production of the show make up for some of the unsavory moments. Although many of the characters on the show will not, here’s hoping American Horror Story lives on on television screens for many moons to come.
American Horror Story: Cult airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
