On November 24, 2019 the 47th annual American Music Awards were held. This ceremony celebrates different types of artists in the industry who represent several genres and styles of music. This year, female artist, Taylor Swift won artist of the year, one of the biggest awards in the AMA’s followed by many prestigious awards presented by many famous artists. This award show is watched by over 6.55 million people and is one of three major award shows on national TV.
One of the most successful artists of the night, Taylor Swift, won six awards in 2019. “She is successful and is liked by millions of people all over the world and that’s why she won so many awards,” said Jenna Rolen. She was also in the running with Drake, Ariana Grande, Halsey, and Post malone. Rolen believes, “Ariana Grande would have been my choice for artist of the year, just because I find her music more entertaining.” Despite opinions, it cannot be denied that Taylor Swift has been successful since her early start as a young artist and since then, she has grown to win a total of 29 AMA awards, the most of any artist who has been in attendance.
Another honorable mention of the ceremony was Billie Eilish. During the 2019 AMA awards show she won “Best New Artist,” recognized for her huge growth in fame in the music industry over the past year. Dylan Blum says, “She became very popular very quickly and she was sure to win the award.” Her music video for Bad Guy was also in the running for best video. Billie, along with Luke combs, Lil Nas X, Lizzo, and Ella Mai were all up for the new artist award. “Billie Eilish is personally my favorite female artist because her style of music is enjoyable to listen to and she releases music often enough to keep people interested,” Says Blum. Billie EIlish’s attendance to the AMA’s was recognized as her increase in growth as an artist.
Another major award is “Album Of The Year.” Winning this award means an artist’s album was purchased and listened to more than any other. This year Taylor Swift’s “Lover” album won. “My favorite album of 2019 was Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next album. Personally, I think it should have won the award because it featured plenty of extremely popular songs,” believes Kate White. This style of pop music is currently known as one of the most popular featuring singers like, Jonas Brothers, Post Malone, and Shawn Mendes. The most widely known genres are pop, rap, and country and Kate White says pop is her favorite because, “It makes you feel good when you listen to it.” The AMA’s will continue every year honoring these artists who continue sharing their talent with the world.
