Music Through the Ears of Students

As pop culture makes its way into more aspects of our everyday lives, we become increasingly more dependent on music and new songs that are coming out. Recently, a ton of popular artists have dropped their new albums. Winn Marzullo makes a comment on the recent album releases and says that some of his favorites are, “Astroworld one hundred percent, Drip Harder, and Tha Carter V.” For Bailey Hebert the songs that she has had on repeat lately are, “Any song from Usher`s new album and ‘7am Freestyle’ by Juice Wrld and Future.” Another sophomore, Julia Williams, says that her favorite artist at the moment is Post Malone. His latest album was released all the way back on April 27th, 2018 but his song, “Better Now” is still on the Billboard Top 100 in fourth place.
Music is a part of most everyone`s lifestyle and daily routines. Without it, the world would be bland and boring. For Bailey Hebert, she says, “I do everything with music in the background so without it, life would be a lot more boring.” Winn Marzullo also adds, “Without music my life would be completely different, because whenever I am sad, I listen to music to cheer me up, when I`m riding the bus or walking through school and doing my work, I am just always listening to music.” Julia feels the same way about how the absence of music would totally change her life as well. She says, “Well music is a way for me to unwind in stressful situations, so I think it makes my life a lot easier. And if I wasn`t able to have that in my life, I wouldn`t know what to do.”
While music can have so many benefits to our daily lives, it can also harm us and younger generations. Winn says that music can be harmful because, “If you are trying to focus and you are listening to a good song, then it gets you out of your zone because you want to start dancing.” Julia also agrees with this statement but adds, “Yeah, sometimes it is distracting but I tend to daydream a lot in general, so listening to music kind of makes it worse.” Along with being distracting, music can have negative impacts to the young people who are listening. In particular, rap music is one of the main genres that can be harmful. With its foul language and more mature topics, little kids who like to listen to this genre are also learning about things way beyond their years. Julias says, “I think a lot of rap music does mention things that younger kids should not be exposed to, and I think it is important for kids to wait until an appropriate age to listen to the more inappropriate music.”
Aside from the negatives, music is over all something that we, as students, clearly depend on to carry us through the day. With new album releases coming constantly, the cravings for music, old and new, will never come to an end.
