The transition from middle to high school can be a turbulent period for some underclassmen, especially without any guidance. Luckily, I asked our seniors if they are willing to share some of the knowledge they have picked up after four years of high school experience. By now, seniors know what high school can be like as a freshman, and although for everyone it varies, three seniors share their hopes for first-year students in high school. Victoria Ortiz is on the path to finishing high school strong and learning as she continues to go on this journey. “When entering this new chapter in life always remember to have a positive mindset and be yourself, be confident, and know that it's okay to make mistakes”. Victoria had challenging times trying to balance school with her social life. “It was difficult, there are many things I wish I could have done differently, but because of what I experienced it taught me a lot and gave me a better way to view certain things in a better perspective”. She also stated, “always be prepared, be organized and prioritize your schoolwork. Personally, I always cared for my grades and always aiming for the best I say go for a 4.0 but a 3.5 is also a good one to have I do know you can get a cord for having at least a 3.5 or higher considering you as honor roll.”
Becoming more involved with the school has helped Victoria make new friends and enjoy going to school. She tried to take every opportunity she got offered, which not only helped her contribute to the school but also helped her create more bonds between new people. “Hope is a club everyone should join as well as this new club called Fuzion Latina. Fuzion is a dance club, and it is incredibly fun. I have made lots of friends. Also, the friendship club. And having academic clubs is also good”.
For Janney O'Conner, a soon to be graduate of Hillgrove high school. It was a mixture of different things. Her high school experience was an up and down roller coaster. High school has taught her a few things and one of them is that you just must do anything you have to do to get by. “Get good grades, try to accomplish all your goals. Having good study habits and doing work on time, do not wait till the last minute. Use flash cards, quiz lets to help you study. I would take a picture of everything and would keep track of what I need to do”. She said it was her way to keep track of everything. Many people think differently but for her that was the best way, since she would not keep track of posted notes. Having everything on her phone was a better method for her. Joey is a rising college student, maintaining schoolwork is also incredibly good as well as preparing for the ACT's and the SAT because colleges do look in what grades you make there. some clubs do offer cords if you stay through senior year. If you have a 3.5 or higher you can obtain a cord for honor roll as well which is also particularly good. If you do not know what major you want to take, if you do plan to go to college, talk to your counselor, follow them because sometimes they do post things where you can get scholarships or even make a meeting to see how they can help you out”. “My advice is to join that sports team, join that club, and get involved. Go to that football game, please go to that football game. Go to that party, enjoy yourself, and make the most of it,” said Joey. “You just need to stay on your homework and stuff, but still, you need to have a good time.”
In conclusion, all this good advice is always good to hear when you are not sure on what you plan to do when getting into a new fresh start.
