Watching the super bowl can be a really fun thing. All of the family and friends at someone's house or party are just laughing, talking and enjoying a good game. Sitting with people, surrounded with finger foods and soda waiting for the game to come back on, as the TV plays a super bowl ad and everyone glances at it while making conversation. Do super bowl ads actually have a purpose or are they something there just to fill space for the broadcasters? Does anyone actually enjoy super bowl ads? I went to Hillgrove High School to ask the locals around about their thoughts on super bowl ads.
The first student I interviewed on this intriguing topic was Noah Abrams. He is an 11th grader At Hillgrove High School who watched the super bowl on Sunday night. The first question I asked was did he actually watch any super bowl ads this year. His initial response was,”Yes I did.” I proceeded to ask if there was any super bowl ad that made him laugh out loud or giggle and I asked him to describe it. He then said,” uhh I mean some made me chuckle a bit nothing serious though.” We shared a laugh as he finished his sentence and then moved onto the next question which was what do you think most of the ads target market was age wise? The response to the question was,” Mainly everybody I mean some ads like yea they can be directed towards everyone.” As we moved on I asked if he thought the ads were entertaining this year. “Yes they were.” I asked my next question which was did any of the ads influence him in any way. “No not really no,” he said with a blank face. We moved onto our final question and that was what was his favorite super bowl ad of all time? He knew that second and responded,” The one last year it was like everybody in the NFL and they were all together somewhere.” I then figured out he was talking about the NFL 100 Superbowl commercial that came out last year.
After that moment, I moved onto my next interviewee, which was Coach Huggins. To get a better variety I asked a well trusted adult and coach. The first question asked was did he actually watch any super bowl ads this year. He responded saying,” Uhhh I paid attention to some of them.” Then proceeding onto the next question I asked do you think the ads talked about something relevant? He took a second to think then said,” There were a couple of did yes, not many though.” As we hurried along the question was does he have an all time favorite super bowl ad? “Mmmh I do not particularly remember no.” As we began to wrap because he had to leave I asked my final question which was do you think the ads get worse every year. The answer he gave was,” I think over time they have been yeah.” That statement he made was proven to be true as many of the super bowl ads get rejected before airing.
With all my responses, I drew up a conclusion that not many people actually pay attention to the ads during the super bowl game. Well at least not many people at Hillgrove High School think super bowl ads are entertaining or memorable. As we wait for next year's NFL Super Bowl ads to be better than all the previous we hope for improvement entertaining wise.
