The Downfall of Gabbie Hanna
by Adrian Barnes
Gabbie Hanna started her Vine account right after graduating college. A couple of years later the app announced the discontinuation of Vine and a lot of its users moved to other platforms, the big one being Youtube. Gabbie’s popularity came from her storytimes, people found certain elements relatable and entertaining as they shared parts of their lives. A fair amount of people do not like storytime YouTubers because they make something out of nothing. What they talked about could be something super small and they just blow it up out of proportion. And that is the gist of who she is, or so you might think.
Gabby has since moved on to a different style of content. What that is no one is not really sure, one day she is cleaning, the next day she is making corn on the cob, and lets throw in a music video here and there. Gabbie’s decline in popularity and loss of credibility started in 2017 when she accused Ricegum, another popular YouTuber, of hitting and scratching her. They had run into each other at a birthday party that a bunch of influencers were attending. Gabbie approached him and joked about the two of them rap battling, she then claimed later that he hit her and shattered her phone which is a pretty big accusation. Andrea a junior said, “I never used Vine so the first time I saw something of hers was during the storytime era where a bunch of YouTubers talked about outrageous experiences.” After this scandal Gabbie then had a solid year staying quiet until she supposedly scammed her fans.
Essentially she was sponsored by a brand called The Kenza cosmetics and advertised that they have free makeup brushes, and all you have to do is pay for shipping. A bunch of her fans paid for these brushes and never received them. Fans were upset, bothering her on Twitter calling it a scam, and then Gabbie responded. Gabbie made a video doing her makeup with these brushes, but like all scandals on this youtube, it was eventually forgotten.
The biggest reason that everyone is talking about Gabbie Hanna is because of a video made by another content creator named JessieSmiles. Jessie and Gabby stopped being friends because Jessies’ boyfriend Curtis was being taken to court for sexual assault and he took a plea deal where the charges were dropped and he pleaded guilty to felony assault instead. Jessie later uploaded a video talking about it and talks about a conversation between herself and Gabbie. Jackie, a senior said, “To be completely honest when I was younger I did watch Gabbie Hanna. I enjoyed her channel. It does have a recurring theme, what I've noticed is that she's hypocritical and she'll discuss people, talk about how they can do better, and won’t apply that same advice to herself.” Viewers say that Gabby has a habit of making herself seem like she is the victim in every situation, and she is constantly talking about how good of a person she is.
Many of Gabbie’s viewers, if it includes vine, youtube, or any other social platforms, have given up on Gabbie in terms of her honesty and taking responsibility. Viewers say that Gabbie always tries to defend herself and never takes responsibility to make herself seem like a good person. Good people do not feel the need to constantly talk about how good they are. Alot of her audience notices that she also supported an alleged rapist which is just wrong on so many levels. At the end of the day, she only cares about herself and has no regard for the people around her, and that's the type of person no one needs in their life.
