What Does Adoption Mean To You?

Adoption comes from the old French word adoptare, meaning, “to choose for oneself.” Another definition is “to take by choice into a relationship.” These seem like simple words for such a complex concept. The truth is that adoption is so much more than just choosing to do so, it is a powerful, life-changing event for everyone involved.
Every day the number of orphans and foster kids in the world grows larger and adoption is one of the ways we can prevent that. Adoption is one of the greatest ways for couples to give unwanted kids a happy home.
Many kids are adopted all around the world, but some are just around the corner. Samantha Snyder, a student from Hillgrove High School, was adopted when she was 11. She went from foster home to foster home and finally was adopted. She has brief recollection of her birth parents. “I remember my birth parents a little, but I would not want to see them again because I feel like it would bring up bad memories.” She explained that she has a great relationship with her parents now and is happy with how her life turned out. She also explained what adoption meant to her. “Adoption to me means giving the kid love, respect, and care that they deserve.”
Another student from Hillgrove, David Stretch explained that he was adopted at the age of four and does not remember much of his life before then but then he explained that it is for the best. “I love my life now I would not change it for the world.” He also explained what adoption meant to him. “It is hope for not only the child but for the parents.”
Children that get adopted have hope and strive to do better with their lives, but what about the feelings of the couples that are about to become parents. Cristy Stretch, a mom of three adopted children, explained what it is like to experience adoption. “When I first saw those kids, I was honestly really nervous, but I knew when my eyes met there's that they were mine.” She described her experience as amazing but there were some difficulties. “Adoption is definitely worth it, but it does come with unspoken challenges” She ended the conversation with what she thinks adoption is. “To me adoption is a direct correlation of how God adopts us spiritually.”
Essentially adoption can mean many different things. It can be described as hope, sacrifice, or even loving someone you have never met. Adoption is a beautiful thing and is one of the greatest displays of unconditional love.
