My favorite College rivalry is Florida State (FSU) vs Florida Agricultural Mechanical College (FAMU) . They are both in Tallahassee Florida with only a street separating them. Considering, them being so close, they are vastly different schools. Florida State is a public university (“No. 19 among national public universities in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings.”) founded by Francis Eppes in 1851. They currently have over 45,000 students (about twice the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) from 130 countries. Their mascot is the Seminole, and according to their admissions page their acceptance rate is 37%. Making them an incredibly competitive school to get into. Down the road there's FAMU. The FAMU rattlers are the highest ranked HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) in the US. The Rattlers were founded on October 3, 1887, by Elmira Mangum. They are smaller compared to FSU, only enrolling about 11,000 students (about the seating capacity of Cameron basketball stadium at Duke University) from 70 countries every year. These are two immensely popular schools with great accomplishments, but I wanted to know which people would choose if given the choice.
I spoke to my peers at Hillgrove high school, and some family members. Currently many seniors I know are touring and applying for schools. Senior Cameron Jones said, “I would like to attend an HBCU, so I would choose FAMU, because I want to be surrounded by my culture when I go to college.” HBCU are great places to explore and learn more about yourself, they are two very diverse and people from all backgrounds. Unlike most people I know I would choose FSU. I recently visited the campus and fell in love with everything they have to offer. Although my mom says, “I went to Valdosta state, but I prefer FAMU!” She has been attending their homecoming since she was 17 with my aunts and cousins! Even many of my peers, chose FAMU, Junior Janna C said “FAMU has an incredible athletics program, I especially enjoy watching their cheerleaders!” Florida State (FSU) and Florida Agricultural Mechanical College (FAMU) are both great schools, and people love them for different reasons.
