In one’s lifetime there are few movies that are worthy of high praise, praise that makes it iconic for the years to come or as pop culture refers to them “cult classics”. For the 60’s it was Hitchcock’s Psycho, for the 70’s it was Spielberg’s Jaws, 80’s were about Hughes’ The Breakfast Club, and the 90’s were dominated by Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. However the 2000’s are filled with instant classics but one that will definitely join the ranks will be A Star Is Born.
A Star Is Born first premiered in 1937, with the original storyline about a struggling actress and her love interest being a faded movie star. However, the plot has evolved over the past decades into a love story between a male rock star and the struggling female singer songwriter that changes him. Although each movie has been held as one of the greats, the 2018 rendition has cemented its place as a hall of famer. In Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut, he himself plays Jackson Maine, a seasoned and talented rock star who has so many demons that a good portion of the movie deals with his alcohol and drug abuse. Enter Lady Gaga’s character Ally, a struggling singer/songwriter. The two meet by chance in a drag bar where Ally performs “La Vie en rose,” a beautiful french song that enchants Jackson and from then on becomes a whirlwind romance between them, which is often fractured by Ally’s growing career as a pop star and Jackson’s battle with addiction. Overall the the movie has a tragic ending, but not before Lady Gaga sends it off with another earth shattering song.
Critics are raving over everything from the cameos of different celebrities (we see you Dave Chappelle, Alec Baldwin, Halsey, Shangela) to the cute appearances of Charlie, the dog in the movie and Bradley Cooper’s real life best friend. But the main point for everybody seems to be Lady Gaga whose vocals serve as if they were a character in the movies themselves. There is a constant buzz that suggests that A Star Is Born may be on the shortlist for an Oscar nomination. Whatever the case may be, this movie really did hit all the right notes.
