Melodies and rhythms have a unique way of affecting our nervous system. When words fall short, music can heal life's trials and tribulations. For many, listening to music serves as a form of therapy, allowing them to process grief, anger, or sadness. Remedy Psychiatry did a study on music and how it affects people, stating, “It cannot be denied, we love our music here in the U.S. According to research done in a 2014 study, 75% of Americans claim that they actively choose to listen to music, while only 73% of people reported that they actively choose to watch TV. In addition, over half of young adults in the U.S. aged 18-29 years old report streaming music every single day.” Music has become a staple in the world today. It has a huge effect on young adults, especially teenagers.
Some teens even sit in class listening to music. Aiden Sherman, a student at Hillgrove Highschool answered, “I listen to music every day,” When you do something every day it becomes routine. Aiden Sherman also said this about how music has affected his mental health, “Probably has increased it because when I listen to music, I'm usually stressed so it helps me in that way.” Routine is fundamental to people. It affects your well-being. Kamaran Bokmuller, “It's affected me on some of the life decisions I've made. I mean just put me through a lot of phases.” Emphasizing the impact music is having on people's lives. Stating that, “I feel like it becomes so important because it has become so relatable.” A coping mechanism.
Not in the sense that it will muffle people's problems temporarily, but in a way that makes people feel better because there's someone else out there who is feeling the same way you do. Teenagers today find comfort in that.
