The 90’s were nothing if not iconic. The clothes, movies, music, attitude - everything. Movies and entertainment have changed a lot over the years. The Talon took to the halls to investigate some changes between 90’s movies and current day movies.
Hillgrove students have strong opinions on a variety of topics - movies are no different. They seem to think that movies have changed a lot since the late eighties/early nineties. For Tanner Shell, an 11th grader, whose favorite movie from the era is Jurassic Park, they have changed a lot. He reported all good changes, such as, “Camera quality has improved, and they can do some pretty cool effects with graphics.” Maddie Gale, a junior at Hillgrove, thinks, “The most noticeable change from the 80/90’s is the theme. It kind of went from adventure to chick-flicks.” However, sophomore Destiny Luster, thinks old movies were made better. She told The Talon, “A lot of recent movies tend to drag on and add extra scenes that have nothing to do with the plot, while older movies usually get straight to the point. I think current writers and directors could take away from that.” The nineties era contains some of the most memorable movie characters to this day, including but not limited to: John Bender, Ferris Bueller,Cher Horowitz, and Forrest Gump. Tanners personal favorite is Ferris Bueller, because, “He’s so relaxed, chill, funny, and the kind of friend I want to have.” However, his favorite duo is Forrest and Jenny, of Forrest Gump.
While the 90’s are better known for being a great era for arts and entertainment, it had its lapses. Baby Geniuses of 1999 got a Rotten Tomatoes score of 2%, the sequel is currently number three on IMDB’s bottom 100 list. Hillgrove students, however, do not agree with the internet. Destiny named her least favorite movie of the era, “Any of the Star Trek movies.” Tanner Shell said his was Edward Scissorhands, and Maddie Gale reported that hers was, Batman and Robin.
On the other hand, there are movies like 10 Things I Hate about You, and Clueless. 10 Things I Hate about You being Maddie’s favorite movie, Hillgrove students agree with popular opinion on movies like these. Destiny reported, “They [popular teen movies of the 90’s] are relatable and entertaining, everyone loves them.” She also named her favorite movie of the era as, The Breakfast Club, which is arguably the most popular teen movie of the 90’s.
