Coronavirus Second Wave?
By: Taelin Vaughn
The Coronavirus pandemic has been going on for several months and many individuals fear the effects of the second wave arriving soon. There have been many cases especially in the United States and the death rates have increased tremendously. In addition, businesses, restaurants and local stores have been shut down all across the country causing many people to become quarantined for months. With the holidays coming soon, many humans may find it difficult to follow the rules and regulations of the virus. “As cases continue to escalate exponentially across the United States, spending Thanksgiving at home with the people you live with is the best way to celebrate,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, Covid-19 could potentially get worse considering that individuals are not social distancing. During Halloween, many authorities and state officials have cited social gatherings and parties during the coronavirus outbreak. Many doctors and specialists suggest that if we want things to go back to normal, we need to take this virus more seriously.
Many people believe that the second wave of the Coronavirus will be far worse than the first wave. According to the John Hopkins Medicine, human behavior is the primary factor of this virus. In other words, many individuals choose to follow safety precautions of the CDC guidelines. This is a major issue today because cases are continuing to rise, causing the virus to get worse. Michael Dale, a Father of two girls says, “I think the coronavirus spike will be bigger and far worse than the first wave because we are seeing unprecedented deaths now because of this. My hope now is that we will have several vaccines that will show much more promise in research studies. It gets better before it gets worse.” However, Mr. Michael mentions, “There are several ways people can protect themselves for the second wave including social distancing, handwashing for at least twenty seconds, wearing protective gear such as facemasks, purchasing essential household items, getting a COVID test and most importantly using common sense and not going to social gatherings or parties.”
Many people can agree that citizens are careless when it comes to social distancing and following other safety guidelines. Seydou Sissoko, a Sophomore at Hillgrove High School says, “A lot of teens do not take this virus seriously and they do not want to wear their masks or social distance. This is why cases are continuing to rise.” In addition, Seydou says, “I think many people are not going to be cautious about the second wave because they think the virus is over. For example, I went to the store and there were people without masks on. This just shows how careless people are about the pandemic.”
Some individuals believe that the Coronavirus could have been handled better or more responsibly. 15-year-old Cameron Jones says, “I think we could have done a better job controlling the cases. For example, in March there were thousands of cases and the curve would not go flat. This was a major concern to many Americans because public places were shut down for months. Not to mention, the virus is still going on and there are many cases and deaths due to people not wearing their masks and social distancing.” Furthermore, many people including teens find it difficult to obey CDC guidelines, however there are many alternatives and other activities that they can participate in. Jones says, “They can play games together on a gaming system, talk on FaceTime, or have a small gathering with masks.”
The Coronavirus has been discussed around the world as a very popular topic. Many people are curious about the vaccine and when the disease is going to end. After all, individuals can only do so much. According to experts, one of the keyways to help avoid Coronavirus transmission is regular handwashing. Washing the hands with soap or sanitizer helps to destroy any viruses on the hands that people may have touched or come in contact with. Ultimately, there are many websites and articles that people can view to educate themselves about the Coronavirus pandemic.
