Just this past week on February 3rd, twenty-six year old rapper, 21 Savage, was arrested and detained due to an unrenewed visa. His actual name is Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph and he was born in London. He arrived in America at the young age of seven even though Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lied and claimed he arrived at the age of fourteen. In 2006 as a child, his parents overstayed their visas leaving him without legal status. He then in 2017 applied for a U visa, which protects victims of crimes and their families, but it has been pending ever since. Only 10,000 are given out each year so it is common to have to wait multiple years to receive one.
After spending more than a week in a Georgia detention center, it is said that the rapper will be released on February 13th on bond. Any further updates have yet to be confirmed.
Jake Bond, a student here at Hillgrove, said, “I was pretty astonished, I mean I’ve heard him before. He said he was from Atlanta, so I thought he actually was. I never would’ve imagined the U.K. or anywhere near Europe.”
Bond continued to say, “You gotta do [the legal process], but I guess I would make the process faster? And more background checks? But we have to enforce [the law]. If you’re not gonna enforce the laws or rules of immigration, then we’re gonna have a lot more problems than just a few people in jail.”
Another Hillgrove Student, Gracie Smith, said, “[I’m a fan] because I like the type of flow he has. He hasn’t been causing any problems so he shouldn’t be held. He should be allowed to stay.”
Atikah Bint-Halim, a Hillgrove student as well, commented, “I wasn’t surprised [at the situation], I thought it was just funny, all the memes.”
In the midst of the situation well known rapper Jay-Z intervened to try and help out. He said the whole situation is “an absolute travesty”, and in saying so he hired 21 Savage one of the best immigration lawyers out there, Alex Spiro.
Bint-Halim commented on this saying, “I think [Jay-Z] helped because he’s one the brothers, you know. You gotta support brothers in business and support brothers of your own race when you can. That was one of the things he could help, so he stepped in.”
Bint-Halim continued and said, “I don't see a problem with immigration. I think it’s wise, and I think it brings new ideas. Sometimes it can bring danger, just like how we have danger in America now. You know we have Americans killing Americans. I think America should change the reforms of being a legal citizen because it’s hard. It takes years and it takes practice, and they ask questions many Americans don’t even know. People shouldn’t alienize humans just because they don’t know their perspective. Immigration is pure and it’s happening. It’s been happening since humans began.”
The lawyer seemed to have resolved the situation due to the release of the rapper now having a finalized date. There has yet to be a comment from the rapper himself or his family, but it seems to be confirmed that 21 Savage will be allowed to stay.
